Welcome !

Troop 870 has been serving the Highlands Ranch area since 1997. We hold weekly Troop meetings on Mondays, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at St. Mark Catholic Church (9905 Foothills Canyon Blvd, Highlands Ranch), we hold monthly meetings such as Committee meetings, parent meetings, and Patrol Leader Council meetings.

Our Mission is to have fun, be boy-lead, encourage advancement, provide regular opportunities for the completion of rank requirements, hold monthly outings, attend yearly summer camping opportunities, retain scouts both younger and older, maintain trained adult leaders, maintain a close connection to the Scout Oath and Law while being faithful to the BSA program.

OKPIK Winter Camping Adventure

Posted on Feb 20 2010 - 9:35pm

Okpik, (Inuit for Snowy Owl) pronounced as (OOk' pick) is the cold-weather adventure program.  Some of our scouts cut their winter teeth in this program by building snow caves called Quinzees and sleeping in them.  Heyden said he never knew you could sleep in a snow ball. Lol.  They pulled polks to and from the camp to carry their gear.  They learned to eat lots of sugars and animal fats to generate energy to keep warm.  No matter how cold it is outside, the inside of the Quinzee stays a balmy 32 deg C.  Unfortunately, it takes lots and lots of energy to build them.  I hope to see many of our scouts going through this course next year.  - Scoutmaster

Klondoree - Troop 870 defeats Sub Zero

Posted on Feb 19 2010 - 10:03am

Troop 870 took command of the cold in this great Klondoree adventure.  They showed others how to manage the cold and have fun to boot!  Equipped properly, managed properly, and winter cold and snow goes from potential misery to just another fun adventure.  The scout did real well in the competition.  They are a small group, no one over age 13 in a field where many participants are over age 16.  They held their own and clocked a great time in sled races, scoring a goal in broomstick hockey, tying fast knots, and starting fire with just flint, steel, and persistance.  The boys earned their Polar Bear Saturday night when temperatures dropped to -1 deg F.  Good job Scouts!  Just attending this trip shows character.  - Scoutmaster
